Marshmallow Challenge: Tallest Structure

• 20 sticks of dry spaghetti
• one yard of string
• one yard of tape
• one marshmallow

1. Set up the supplies for each team
2. Explain the challenge: Build the tallest tower possible that will support a marshmallow, in 18 minutes.
3. Set a timer for 18 minutes
4. Go!

Discussion Questions:
What strategies did each group employ? What did the winning group do differently than the other groups? How many times did you attempt to complete a tower? In other words, did you spend the entire time working on one tower, or did you rebuild the tower several times? At what point did you incorporate the marshmallow: beginning, middle, or end? What would your group do differently next time?
