The name Taser is an acronym for “Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle”. Arizona inventor Jack Cover designed it in 1969; naming it for the science fiction teenage inventor and adventurer character Tom Swift.

PETA has obtained video footage showing that the U.S. military repeatedly shocked completely conscious pigs with Tasers.

On September 17, 2007, U.S. Senator John Kerry addressed a Constitution Day forum at the University of Florida. During the question and answer period, University police forcibly removed Andrew Meyer, a 21-year-old fourth-year undergraduate telecommunications student, from the forum, restraining him through direct force and with the help of a Taser.
